Rustic Autumn Lakeside Tablescape

We set out for the lake on a chilly afternoon in search of a quiet place near the water. Surrounded by autumn's changing colors, fallen leaves, and barren bushes, we found our spot.

Our favorite autumn colors accompanied us to the water's edge, and joined with nature's seasonal display of rustic splendor.

Nature rarely needs enhancement, and so the goal is to complement, not overpower.

This setup is meant for a delicious meal of bison burgers served on a half roll with a side salad. Of course, any tasty treat or meal will do. Just be sure to bundle up if you're headed to the water on a cool day in the northern states.

The peaceful lake offers a tranquil setting. Only a few brave souls venture onto the water in November, which means we can slow down and enjoy the process of setting a table fit for a lakeside feast.

We're fond of using wool blankets as table coverings, though we wouldn't recommend it if children are dining with you. Like scarves, I'm a bit obsessed with wool blankets and display them everywhere, all year long. I do change out the colors to suit the season. The checkered napkins are by Potterton Hill.

It is a delight to set a fabulous table, but it's also a lot of work to source just the right pieces. We don't like everything to come in complete sets. Mixing and matching complementary dishes, linens, and centerpieces is all part of the fun.

What do you enjoy most about setting a nice table? Where is your favorite place to eat outdoors?
